Boston Bench Boston, MA
Competition Entry
The Cleat Seat was a competition entry in the Design Museum Boston's Street Seat Competition. The design is inspired by the Fresnal Lens technology developed for projecting light from lighthouses. The benches become beacons that draw people along the waterfront as the lighthouses directed seaman into the Boston Harbor at night. We modeled scalloped pattern of the Fresnal Lens and then distorted the pattern to project light in interesting patterns across the ground plane. The design utilizes 100% recycled materials, incorporating recycled wood pillings for the bench slatting and recycled glass to cast the bench pedestals.
